Nauthiz

So you are going to examine Nauthiz, the second Rune in the second Aett.

Nauthiz looks like an uneven X, depicted by two twigs that can be used as the 'emergency fire'.

In a literal sense, Nauthiz means "need". This can be in material ways, but also in spiritual ways. As usual, let us look at the traditional meanings:
Normal: There is a definite need for restraint. There will be holdups, and the need to reconsider your plans carefully. If you can not restore harmony at this time, restore balance at least. Consider the uses of adversity.
Inverted: Here is the great teacher disguised as the bringer of pain and limitation. Only at the darkest hour do we see just how bright the light is within ourselves. Cleansing is needed to strengthen the character. Only after great darkness will we know and see the true light.

It may be clear that nobody is really waiting for a Rune like Nauthiz. But still, it is part of the set, and its capacity is part of life. There will always be times that restraint is needed. When we have to step back and take a close look at what we are doing.
Once I did a combined Tarot/Rune spread for someone, together with a lady friend. She knew about the astrological impact of the Tarot cards, and I explained the quality (if you wish to call it that). The person that was listening to us was not really happy, but she reluctantly accepted what the Rune had to say. Even when she did not like the implications of things.

Nauthiz will always show you that there are more ways to walk your path than the way you are looking at. If you are ready to pick a fight with "Wyrd", your fate, then Nauthiz is the one that can point you into a better direction. Nauthiz stands for the old truth "Know thyself". Speak with yourself, in meditation or otherwise. Consider the options. Look where you are, where you want to go, and how you can get there more easily.

As you can see with Hagalaz, Nauthiz also is a Rune of change. When it comes, there is a reason. Use it wisely.
